New psychology research from the University of British
Columbia has proven. That the smell of your boyfriend’s t-shirt can help
increase the quality of your sleep.
The smell of your boyfriend's t-shirt will enhance your
sleep quality:
Researchers have discovered that the smell of your spouse's
T-shirt is able to put you to sleep even when your spouse is not physically
present.
Lead author of the study and UBS psychology graduate student
Marlis Hoffer said"Our findings show that participants who took their
partner's body odor had significantly improved their sleep quality. The average
sleep quality among participants in that study improved by more than two
percent. We have seen an effect similar to the size reported orally when taking
a "melatonin" supplement - often used as a sleep aid.
For the study, researchers analyzed the sleep data of 155
participants and two different people were given T-shirts to use as pillows -
one was previously worn by their life partner and the other previously worn or
cleaned by a stranger.
To capture body odor on the T-shirt, participants' life
partners were given a clean T-shirt to stay after 24 hours and were told to
refrain from using deodorants and scented body products, smoking, exercising
and eating certain foods that could affect their body odor. Can The T-shirts
are then refrigerated to preserve the scent of their (partner's) skin.
Each participant in the study was given two shirts on top of
their pillow, without telling their partner which one. They slept for two
nights in a row with two T-shirts. Every morning, a survey was done on how much
rest they took. Their sleep quality was also measured objectively using an
actigraphic slip watch that monitored their movements throughout the night. At
the end of the survey, participants assumed that the shirts they slept with had
not been worn by their peers before.
Participants said that when they slept better at night they
felt like they were sleeping with their partner’s scent. Moreover, their
beliefs are found to be true regardless when sleep clock data indicate that
participants improved their intended sleep quality when they came in contact
with their partner's scent.
“One of the most astonishing findings is how body scents in
life partners can improve the quality of sleep we are aware of and beyond our
consciousness,” said Frances Chen, senior author of the study and an associate
